Polaris Australis, auch Sigma Octantis, Οƒ Octantis oder Οƒ Oct, ist ein Stern im Sternbild Oktant und der derzeit dem sΓΌdlichen Himmelspol nΓ€chstgelegene mit freiem Auge sichtbare Stern.

Polaris Australis, auch SΓΌdlicher Polarstern, SΓΌdpolarstern oder SΓΌdstern genannt, stellt den Polarstern der sΓΌdlichen HemisphΓ€re dar und ist damit das GegenstΓΌck zu Polaris (Ξ± UMi) im Sternbild Kleiner BΓ€r als dem NΓΆrdlichen Polarstern. Allerdings ist der derzeitige SΓΌdpolarstern wegen seiner geringen scheinbaren Helligkeit von 5,47 mag nur bedingt als Navigationsstern geeignet. Der Sternort von Polaris Australis weicht dem Deklinationswert nach um wenig mehr als 1Β° vom HimmelssΓΌdpol ab.

In der Flagge Brasiliens wird eine blaue Himmelskugel mit Sternen des SΓΌdhimmels gezeigt, neben 26 anderen auch Polaris Australis, der in diesem Zusammenhang fΓΌr den Distrito Federal do Brasil um die Hauptstadt BrasΓ­lia steht.
